September gemstone: Sapphire fun facts

by Tawny Reynolds on Aug 31, 2016

Happy birthday, all you September sapphires!  While I’m pretty happy with my own aquamarine birthstone, I’ve always been a bit envious of those of you who lucked out and got a deep, vibrant color like sapphire for your birthstone.  A little sparkle is nice, but this vivid, cobalt blue really draws the eye!  No wonder it’s consistently one of my best sellers...

While not a traditional gem, the sapphire blue glass used to make Sundrop Jewelry (made from Skyy Vodka bottles!) definitely hits the traditional vibrant sapphire blue color.  Longer drops have an ombre shading of blues from the thinner, paler top to the full deep gem-tone of the main droplet, while designs with shorter drops add a pure, strong sapphire blue *pop*!

Sapphire Fun Facts:

Sapphires are gem-quality pieces of the mineral corundum, and is mined around the world - most North American sapphire comes from Montana.

Sapphire comes in pretty much every color of the rainbow (except red, technically, since red corundum has it’s own gem name - Ruby).  However, sapphire is most commonly associated with deep blue.

Most natural sapphires are heat-treated to make them look more blue and disguise inclusions.

Artificial sapphire is identical to natural sapphire, except it can be made without flaws or inclusions.  Sapphire is the third hardest mineral, and cheap artificial sapphire is used in lasers, ultra-thin electronic wafers, and shatter-resistant windows for armored cars.  Some Apple Watches have screens made from “sapphire glass."

Besides being the birthstone for September, Sapphire is also the gemstone for both 5th and 45th anniversaries.  So, if you have one of those coming up - happy anniversary!

Whether it’s your birthday this month or not, have a great September!

I love my February amethyst birthstone, but I’m a tinge jealous of these gorgeous blues. What neat fun facts about sapphires!
